Made in America

“The Power of Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Utopia“ An der Kreuzung Randolph und Desplaines Street, dem Haymarket Square, wurden 1886 Kämpfe ausgetragen, aus welchen der 1. Mai als Festtag der Arbeiter hervorging. Es wurde um die Durchsetzung des Achtstundentages gekämpft. Die „Haymarket Riots“ wurden blutig niedergeschlagen. „Made in America“ ist ein Titel aus dem von Jay-Z und Kanye West 2011 publizierten HipHop-Album „Watch the Throne“. Jay-Z gehört neben Warren Buffett zu den reichsten Männern der USA. Er ist afro-amerikanischer Herkunft, wuchs im Ghetto von Brooklyn NY auf und thematisiert mit seinem Kollegen Kanye West den Stolz, es in Amerika „geschafft“ zu haben. Der Titel „Made in America“ verkörpert die Widersprüchlichkeit des „American Dream“. 

“… Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Hope“ Linda Weiss hat in der Fotoarbeit „Sunset Bullet Time (Rockefeller Center NY) – To Think the Outside (Power)“ die Problematik der politischen Handlungsfähigkeit formuliert, in welcher die Vereinnahmung politisch erkämpfter Errungenschaften seitens konservativer Kräfte und der zu überwindenden Frustration verhandelt wird. In der weiteren Fotoarbeit „Sunset Bullet Time (Lincoln Square Chicago) – Barack Obama (What I See in Lincoln’s Eyes)“ setzt sie ihre Forschung über den Ort in Bezug zu politischem Handeln fort. Deshalb verwendet sie hier die Matrix der Geschichte in Relation zur gegenwärtigen Politik als Metapher für den proklamierten Mut zur Hoffnung. Auf der Plattform des Dank-Haus-Chicago, am Lincoln Square gelegen, erstellt Linda Weiss „Shot by Shot“ ein Panorama. Die Bilder werden von ihr mit Zitaten aus dem Text „What I See in Lincoln’s Eyes“ von Barack Obama verknüpft.

“… Word, Thinking, and Anger in Relation to Economics, and Empowerment“ Anna Bromleys Performance: „Take a Dream on a Sunday“ thematisiert die Verwendung komödiantischer Vortragstechniken im Organisationsmanagement der Wirtschaft. Witz, Authentizität und Coolness sind diffuse und widersprüchliche Markenwerte im Wettbewerb um Aufträge und Positionen. Sie sollen unmittelbar und virtuos wirken, unterhaltsam sein sowie Begehren erzeugen. In einem etwa fünfzehnminütigen Speech Act Re-enactment wird untersucht, welche Verbindung das Komödiantische in Bezug auf Status, Hierarchie und Macht aufnimmt. „Take a Dream on a Sunday“ ist Teil einer Langzeituntersuchung über komödiantische Vortragspraktiken im Bereich der Wissensrepräsentation.

Linda Weiss studierte Freie Kunst in Nürnberg, Berlin (Freie Klasse) und Leipzig. Ihr Studium beendete sie 2006 mit dem MFA an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Linda Weiss wird in Moskau am Multimedia Art Museum und Haus der Fotografie Artist in Resident sein. Die Förderung erfolgt über den Internationalen Kulturaustausch der Berliner Senatskanzlei für Kulturelle Angelegenheiten.

Anna Bromley ist Künstlerin, Autorin und Sozialwissenschaftlerin. Ausgehend von affektiven Brüchen in empirischen Untersuchungsmethoden fragen ihre Speech Act Re-Enactments nach der wirklichkeitskonstituierenden Macht von Sprachhandlungen. Ihre Essays, szenischen Texte und visuellen Essays erschienen in internationalen Publikationen. Für ihre monatliche Radiosendung „Lautstrom“ lädt sie Initiatoren transdisziplinärer auditiver Projekte zu Künstlergesprächen ins Radiostudio reboot fm ein.

“The Power of Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Utopia“ At the junction Randolph and Desplaines Street, the Haymarket Square, in 1886 battles were fought, from which the May 1st emerged as a celebration of labor. It was fought for the enforcement of the eight-hour day. The “Haymarket Riots“ were brutally suppressed. “Made in America“ is a track from the Jay-Z and Kanye West published hip-hop album “Watch the Throne,“ which appeared in 2011. Along with Warren Buffet, Jay-Z is one of the richest men in the United States. He is of African-American descent, grew up in the ghetto of Brooklyn NY, and – with his colleague Kanye West – has discussed the pride to, have “made it“ in America. To me, the title “Made in America“ represents the contradictions of the “American Dream“. 

“… Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Hope“ Linda Weiss specifically felt the need to make political action a topic because the appropriation of politically won progress by conservative forces creates frustration and needs a response. She explored this in the former photo-piece „Sunset Bullet Time (Rockefeller Center NY) – To Think the Outside (Power)“ in 2010. She has continued her exploration on site and political action in Chicago at Lincoln Square. Therefore she uses the historical matrix in relation to current policy as a metaphor for the asserted audacity of hope. On the platform of Dank Haus Chicago, situated close to Lincoln Square, she takes a shot-by-shot panorama.

“… Word, Thinking, and Anger in Relation to Economics, and Empowerment“ Anna Bromleys performance „Take a Dream on a Sunday“ looks at how humorous presentation methods have become a mainstay of organizational management. Wit, authenticity and coolness make for diffuse and contradictory capital in the contest for highly specialized assignments and positions. They should act immediately, be entertaining (in a virtuoso manner) and generate desire. An approximately 15-minute reenactment of a speech act will explore the connections between humor and status, hierarchy, and power. „Take a Dream on a Sunday“ is part of a long-term investigation of humorous presentation methods used in sharing knowledge.

Linda Weiss studied Fine Art in Nuremberg, Berlin (Free Class) and Leipzig. She completed her studies in 2006 with an MFA at Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. She lives and works in Berlin and Leipzig. Linda Weiss will be artist in resident in Moscow at Multimedia Art Museum and House of Photography. The Scholarship has been funded through the Berliner Senatskanzlei für Kulturelle Angelegenheiten (Senate of Cultural Affairs Berlin). 

Anna Bromley is an artist, writer and social scientist. Starting with affective breaks in empirical research methods, her reenactments of speech acts look at the power of speech acts to constitute reality. Her essays, short scenarios, and visual essays appear in international publications. She invites artists and researchers behind transdisciplinary auditory projects to discuss their work in her monthly radio program „Lautstrom“ on
