Die Ausstellung Follow Me bei SCOTTY findet im von Rahmen von SLUICE EXCHANGE BERLIN statt und wird kuratiert vom Projektraum Vane aus Newcastle upon Tyne, Großbritannien.

Die britsche Videoünstlerin EC Davies arbeitet mit Sound, Animation, Drucktechnik, Textilien und Performance. Dafür verwendet sie „Cut-Outs“ von Texten, Lyrik, Musik, Bewegung und Objekten und setzt diese neu zusammen, um im Betrachter verschiedenste emotionale Reaktionen auszulösen.
Masken, Verkleidungen, Popsongtexte und Gesten werden neu kombiniert. Performances entführen in unwirkliche Sphären, wo Raum und Zeit manipuliert sind, um über die Vorstellungen von Rhythmus, Bewegung, Isolation und Zugehörigkeit zu meditieren.
Ihre jüngste Arbeit Press Play and Record (2017) entwickelte sie aus Kollaborationen mit Chören aus Berlin und Nordostengland. Ihre Performances mit Masken waren Teil von Livemusik-Festivals wie Sounds From The Other City (Salford) and The Late Shows, Museums at Night (Vane, Newcastle upon Tyne).
In ihrem neuen Ausstellungsprojekt Follow Me bei SCOTTY führt Davies ihre laufende Forschung über Kommunikation, Spiel und Transformation weiter. Davies‘ Love Dolls – weiche, engelsgleiche Spielfiguren – agieren als magische Talismane und verdeutlichen, wie sich Spirituelles und Rituelles selbst in den einfachsten alltäglichen Situationen entfaltet.

Ihre Arbeiten waren in Großbritannien, Europa und USA zu sehen und wurden mit mehreren Arts Council Awards ausgezeichnet. Davies war Gast verschiedener Künstlerresidenzen. Nach ihrem MA-Abschluss 2001 an der Northumbria University in Newcastle arbeitete sie mit Musikern, Architekten, Nanotechnologen und künstlerischen Bildungsinstitutionen zusammen.
Sie lebt in Berlin und wird vertreten durch den Projektraum Vane.

Vane wurde 1997 von Künstlern gegründet und agiert sowohl als Galerie als auch als flexibler Arbeitsraum für Künstler, die dort neue Arbeiten entwickeln können. VANE ist beheimatet im Orbis Gebäude (Zentrum von Newcastle upon Tyne, UK), in dem verschiedenste Kreativorganisationen beherbergt sind.
VANE repräsentiert eine Gruppe von kritisch engagierten Künstlern aus Nordostengland, Großbritannien, Europa und den USA. VANE bietet eine Plattform für eingeladene Künstler, oftmals in Kooperation mit regionalen, nationalen und internationalen Galerien, Festivals und Gastkuratoren. Gastprojekte werden auch von den Künstlern selbst initiiert. Talks, Performances, Workshops und andere Events begleiten die Aktivitäten und ermöglichen einen kritischen Dialog über die künstlerische Arbeit und den Kontext, in dem sie zu sehen ist.

SLUICE EXCHANGE BERLIN ist ein internationales Ausstellungsformat und kuratorisches Programm, erdacht von der Plattform SLUICE aus London. Es wird gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Alles Mögliche (Berlin) organisiert. Projekträume einer sogenannten „Kunst_community“ bieten eine Ausstellungsplattform für Projekträume aus anderen Ländern. Die „Expos“ stellen eine Alternative zu dominanten organisatorischen Paradigmen und sind von der Überzeugung getragen, daß internationaler Support für lokale Initiativen von substantieller Bedeutung ist. SLUICE EXCHANGE entstand aus verschiedenen Veranstaltungen in New York unter dem Titel EXCHANGE RATES.

EC Davies is a British video installation artist, represented by Vane and based in Berlin. She works with sound, animation, print, textiles and performance. Davies cuts up words, lyrics, music, movement and objects, reassembling them to reveal different types of emotional resonance. Masks, dressing up, pop song lyrics, and gestures are all reedited and recombined in Davies’ work. Performances are projected into imaginary realms where time and space is manipulated in edit, meditating on ideas of rhythm, movement, isolation and togetherness.

Her recent work ’Press Play and Record’ (2017) developed from collaborations and exchanges with choirs in Berlin and North East England. Masked performances and exchanges with over 1000 audience members were included at live music festivals like Sounds From The Other City (Salford) and The Late Shows, Museums at Night (Vane, Newcastle upon Tyne).

Davies‘ new exhibition project ‘Follow Me’ at SCOTTY will develop Davies’ ongoing exploration of communication, play and transformation. Davies‘ Love Dolls – angels in soft form, cuddly toys – act as magical talismans and will explore how the sacred and ritual play out even in the most simple and everyday situations.

Davies has exhibited throughout the UK, Europe and USA and has received several Arts Council Awards, residencies and commissions. Davies has collaborated with musicians, architects, nano-technologists, arts educational establishments on a wide variety of projects since graduating from an MA at Northumbria University at Newcastle in 2001.

The exhibition at SCOTTY Follow Me by artist EC Davies is curated by the gallery space Vane from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Established in 1997 by artists, Vane operates a gallery space, as well as a flexible workspace for artists to develop new work. Vane is based within the Orbis building, a community of creative organisations in the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
VANE represents a group of critically engaged artists from the North East of England, across the UK, Europe and the USA through projects at the gallery and elsewhere. The gallery exhibition programme also provides a platform for the work of invited artists at all career stages, often working in partnership with other regional, national, and international galleries, festivals and guest curators, including hosting projects developed by artists themselves. These are accompanied by a series of talks, performances, workshops and other events designed to enable critically engaged dialogue about the work and the context within which it is shown.
Beyond the gallery, VANE has presented projects at galleries and art fairs across the UK and internationally, including in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.

SLUICE EXCHANGE Berlin is conceived by SLUICE (London) and produced by SLUICE and The Institut für Alles Mögliche (Berlin), SlLUICE EXCHANGE BERLIN is an international exposition of curatorial programmes in which host spaces in one art community open their doors and share their spaces with kindred spaces visiting from elsewhere.
The expo’s aim has always been to offer an alternative to the dominant organisational paradigms whilst demonstrating a belief in the importance of international engagement for otherwise local projects. SLUICE EXCHANGE was borne from previous manifestations in NY under the title Exchange Rates.
