VIRTUAL WALLS / REAL WALLS

Die Performance ist Teil einer Performance-Reihe, die am 28. September 2017 in Venedig startete und am 21. Dezember 2017 in Amsterdam fortgeführt wurde.
In „Virtual Walls“ wird das Ungleichgewicht zwischen der Zahl der ­Touristen und der Einwohner in diesen beiden Städten bearbeitet.
In der Performance „Real Walls“ im Projektraum SCOTTY wird die Künstlerin der Frage nach der Funktion von Mauern heutzutage nachgehen. Schützen uns Mauern vor Gefahr von Aussen? Sind sie auch dazu da unsere eigene Aggression zu stoppen? Und sind wir gegenwärtig dabei eine Festung Europa zu bauen (Flüchtlingsproblematik)? In Berlin, wo eine Mauer ein lange Zeit eine so promintente Rolle gespielt hat, ist das Thema der Performance umso relevanter.

Madelon Hooykaas ist eine international bekannte bildende Künstlerin, Performerin und Filmmacherin. Sie lebt in Amsterdam. Zwischen 1972 und 2004 enstanden die Arbeiten vorwiegend in Zusammenarbeit mit der schottischen Künstlerin Elsa Stansfield, die 2004 unerwartet verstarb. Die beiden waren bekannt als europäische Video-Pionierinnen. Ihre Arbeiten finden sich in weltweiten Sammlungen großer Musseen wieder, wie Moma New York, Tate Gallery, London, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Sie nahmen an zahlreichen Solo- und Gruppenausstellungen rund um die Welt (New York, Montreal, Tokyo, Sydney,, u.a.) teil Seit 2007 führt Madelon Hooykaas die Arbeit unter íhrem eigenen Namen fort.

The performance sequence started on September 28 2017 in Venice and continued on December 21 in Amsterdam. The subject of the performances ‘Virtual Walls’ is the upset balance between the numbers of tourists and the residents of both cities. With the event ‘Real Walls’ at the project space Scotty, the artist is questioning the function of walls nowadays. Are walls to protect ourselves from outside dangers or are they there also to stop our own aggression? And are we creating with the current refuge problem a new Fort Europa? For Berlin, where a wall played such a prominent role for a long time, this performance will be even more relevant and I hope that the public becomes more conscious of walls around the world at the present moment.

Madelon Hooykaas is an international known visual artist, performer and film maker based in Amsterdam. She worked in collaboration with the Scottish artist Elsa Stansfield from 1972 untill 2004 when Elsa unexpected died. They are known as European video pioneers and their work is in the collection of mayor museum as Moma New York, Tate Gallery, London, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. They participated in many solo and group exhibitions around the world, in New York, Montreal, Tokyo, and Sydney. Since 2007 Madelon continues the work under her own name.
