Unsere diesjährige Open Call Ausstellung zum Thema „Freiheit“ läuft vom 25.06.22 – 30.07.22. Die Eröffnung wird am Samstag, den 25.06.2022 ab 19 Uhr stattfinden.

Freiheit: Vom schmalen Grad

Freiheit ist ein prekäres Gut, das stets von Neuem erobert, erkämpft, bewahrt, beschützt und verteidigt werden muss. Spielerisch und ohne Zweck bietet Kunst einen Raum, in dem Tabuisiertes, Unrealistisches, Zweckloses, Utopisches und Dystopisches, Wahnsinniges und Alltägliches erprobt, hinterfragt, ins Gegenteil verkehrt, ausgeleuchtet und durchgespielt werden. In Zeiten, in denen die Welt in Trümmern liegt, darf die Kunst sich dem Schönen zuwenden. In Zeiten, in denen der Rhythmus des Funktionierens die Welt im Takt hält, experimentiert die Kunst vielleicht mit Dystopien und Dysfunktionen.
Doch die Freiheit ist mächtig unter Druck und das nicht nur in Staaten, in denen regimekritischer Ausdruck sanktioniert, die Geburtenrate kontrolliert und Künstler mundtot gemacht werden. Selbst dort, wo gewachsene Demokratien Freiheit absichern und künstlerischer Praxis keine Grenzen, wenn es nicht moralische sind, gesetzt sind, loten wir unser Verhältnis zu Freiheit neu aus. Hier wächst die Gefahr von innen: Wenn alles möglich ist, verkommt die Freiheit dann nicht zur Willkür und Beliebigkeit? Wie autonom und subversiv ist eine Kunst, von der die Welt neue Utopien und Entwürfe erwartet, da ihr selbst die Phantasie und die Hoffnung ausgegangen sind? Was passiert mit der Freiheit in Wissenschaft, Kunst und Kultur, wenn Wörter, Sätze und Menschen aus dem Diskurs und von der öffentlichen Bühne ausgeladen werden? Welchem Impuls folgt diese Sanktionierung und mit welchem Zwang kann ihm begegnet werden, um die alte Freiheit wiederherzustellen? Auch der Ruf nach Freiheit kann in Ideologie umkippen.
Was nach Außen frei anmutet, kann sich zwanghaft und unfrei anfühlen. Selbst die Freiheit, man selbst zu sein, kann zum Gebot versteinern. Und vielleicht ist gerade die Pflicht, also das Gegenteil von Freiheit, der Weg zur Freiheit, zu einer Haltung, in der wir moralisch handeln und uns entscheiden, als freie Menschen und nicht als triebgesteuerte Automaten zu leben?
Was wir unter dem Thema „Freiheit“ verhandeln und ausstellen, fragt nach dem, wo Freiheit sich zeigt, wo sie entsteht und wo sie verschwunden ist. Dabei interessiert uns die Schwelle und das Kippmoment, das Freiheit und Unfreiheit miteinander verschränkt, genauso wie der Gegensatz von frei und gefangen, die unendliche Sehnsucht nach Freiheit und die Frage nach Autonomie, die ohne Verantwortung nicht zu denken ist.

Der Projektraum SCOTTY bietet Künstler:innen und Kurator:innen eine offene Plattform für Ausstellungen, alternative Formate der Kunstvermittlung und für interdisziplinäre Projekte. Der Projektraum agiert marktunabhängig, selbstbestimmt und hierarchiefrei.
Die inhaltliche Arbeit von SCOTTY basiert auf Jahresthemen / Arbeitsschwerpunkten, die für die Dauer von ein- bis eineinhalb Jahren definiert werden. Das diesjährige Thema  ist FREIHEIT.

Freedom

Freedom is a precarious commodity that must always be conquered, fought for, preserved, protected and defended anew.
This year’s Open Call exhibition on „Freedom“ runs from 25.06.22 – 30.07.22. The opening will take place on Saturday, 25.06.2022 from 7 pm.

Freedom: A fine line

Freedom is a precarious commodity that must always be conquered, fought for, preserved, protected and defended anew. The arts are considered the noblest area of freedom: playfully and without purpose, art offers a space in which the taboo, the unrealistic, the purposeless, the utopian and the dystopian, the insane and the everyday are tested, questioned, turned on their head, illuminated and played out. In times when the world is in ruins, art is allowed to turn to the beautiful. In times when the rhythm of functioning keeps the world in time, art may experiment with dystopias and dysfunctions.
But freedom is under powerful pressure, and not just in states where dissident expression is sanctioned, birth rates are controlled, and artists are muzzled. Even where established democracies safeguard freedom and artistic practice has no limits, if not moral ones, we are re-examining our relationship with freedom. Here the danger grows from within: If everything is possible, doesn’t freedom degenerate into arbitrariness and caprice? How autonomous and subversive is an art from which the world expects new utopias and designs, since it itself has run out of imagination and hope? What happens to freedom in science, art, and culture when words, phrases, and people are disinvited from discourse and the public stage? What impulse does this sanctioning follow, and with what coercion can it be met to restore the old freedom? Even the call for freedom can turn into ideology.
What seems free to the outside world can feel coercive and unfree. Even the freedom to be oneself can petrify into a commandment. And perhaps duty, the very opposite of freedom, is the path to freedom, to an attitude in which we act morally and choose to live as free human beings rather than controlled automatons?
What we negotiate and exhibit under the theme of „freedom“ asks where freedom shows itself, where it arises and where it has disappeared. In doing so, we are interested in the threshold and the tipping point that intertwines freedom and unfreedom, as well as the contrast between free and imprisoned, the infinite longing for freedom and the question of autonomy, which cannot be thought of without responsibility.
